This is a plain-language summary for a small expense-splitting app, not legal advice. Please review it before relying on it.

split/away is an expense splitter with no accounts and no sign-up. This page explains what we store and what we don’t.

What we store

When you create a tab and add data — people’s names, expenses, payments, notes and amounts — we save it in our database so it’s there when you come back. We don’t ask for your name or email to create or use a tab, because there are no accounts. The only personal details you ever give us are ones you choose to send: the email address and message in the contact form, or an address you type to email yourself a tab link (both covered below).

Your link is the key

Each tab lives at its own unguessable link. Anyone who has the link can view and edit that tab, so treat it like a password and only share it with people you trust. We can’t recover a lost link or tell you what links exist, because they’re the only identifier we have.

What stays on your device

Your browser’s local storage keeps two things that never leave your device and are never sent to us: your light/dark theme preference, and a short list of tabs you’ve recently opened (so they’re easy to find again). Clearing your browser data removes both.

If you install split/away as an app, your device also caches its design and code so it loads instantly. That cache holds only the app itself — never the contents of your tabs, which are always fetched fresh from the server.

If you contact us

Our contact form asks for your email address and a message. If you send one, we save both so we can read it, reply to you, and keep a record of the exchange. We use your email only to reply — not for marketing. We keep these messages for as long as we need them to deal with your request and for our records; if you’d like yours removed, just ask.

Emailing yourself a link

The Share panel can email a tab’s link to an address you type, so you don’t lose your way back in. We use that address once, to send the email, and store nothing — no record of the address and no list linking emails to tabs. The message carries only the tab’s name and its link.

Smart expense entry (AI)

Some versions of split/away offer an optional Smart add feature that drafts expenses from text you paste or a photo of a receipt. When you use it, the text and/or image you provide are sent to our AI provider (OpenAI) to read and turn into draft rows. This only happens when you explicitly press Extract — nothing is sent automatically — and the image is not kept after the draft comes back. If the feature isn’t enabled, none of this applies and no data is ever sent to OpenAI. The AI only sees what you choose to feed it, so keep receipts and notes free of anything you wouldn’t want shared.

Analytics

We use Fathom Analytics to count visits and see which pages get used. It is a privacy-friendly, cookieless service: it sets no cookies, never tracks you across other sites or devices, and collects no personal data about you. Your tab’s unique link is removed from the page address before a visit is recorded, so the key to your tab is never sent to it — and neither are the contents of your tabs (names, expenses and amounts).

  • No cookies, and no cross-site or cross-device tracking.
  • No advertising.
  • We never sell or rent your data.

Who else sees it

Your data is handled by the hosting and infrastructure we use to run the app, and only as needed to keep it working. We also use Sentry for error monitoring: when something goes wrong, it receives a technical diagnostic report so we can find and fix the problem. Those reports are scrubbed of your tab’s link and never include the contents of your tabs — names, expenses and amounts.

Two more providers are involved only when you take a specific action: our email provider, used to deliver a contact message or a tab link you ask us to email; and OpenAI, used to read what you submit to Smart add (see above). Apart from these providers, we don’t share your data with anyone else, and we never sell or rent it.

Keep it non-sensitive

split/away is for splitting everyday costs. Please don’t store sensitive personal or financial information (such as full card numbers or government IDs) in a tab.

Deleting data

Because there are no accounts, the data we hold about you is whatever lives in your tabs — so you can delete it yourself at any time. Deleting a tab from its settings permanently removes that tab and everything in it — its people, expenses, payments and notes — straight away. We may also remove tabs that have been inactive for a long time to keep the service tidy.

For anything a tab doesn’t cover — a message you sent through the contact form, or any other request to access or erase your data — just contact us and we’ll take care of it.
