About

A free, account-free way to split shared expenses — and a bit about why it exists.

split/away is a free little web app for splitting shared expenses on trips. Start a “tab,” drop in who paid for what, and it works out the simplest set of payments to get everyone square — equal splits, shares, percentages, exact amounts, even refunds.

Why I built it

A few of us travel together most years, and every trip ended the same way — a pile of receipts, a stack of “I’ll get this one,” and nobody quite sure who owed who. The apps meant to sort that out kept getting in the way: they wanted everyone to make an account before they could even chip in, the free versions ran ads or quietly capped how many expenses you could add, and half the features I actually wanted were locked behind a subscription. Most of them felt a generation out of date, too.

So I built the splitter I wanted to exist. No accounts, nothing to install — you share one link with the group and that’s the whole setup. The bits other apps treat as premium — reading a receipt from a photo, live currency conversion, charts, gentle reminders — are just here, free.

No accounts, nothing to install

There are no accounts and nothing to install. Every trip lives at its own private link you share with the group — that’s the whole login. You can paste expenses straight from a spreadsheet, or snap a receipt and let it read the items for you. New to it? The Help page walks through everything, and the Privacy page covers what we store (and what we don’t).

Free and ad-free

I build and run split/away in my spare time and keep it free and ad-free. Support helps cover hosting, the receipt-scanning AI costs, and the time to keep improving it. If you’d like to chip in, thank you — it genuinely helps. ☕
